    We understand a product innovation as an innovation, i.e. a (re)innovation (Latin innovatio). The innovation does not necessarily have to produce a completely new product, but can consist in the modification of an existing one or even fail completely. In his 1964 theory of economic development, Joseph Schumpeter distinguished between “inventions” (technical inventions of a completely new product), “innovations” (implementation of an invention by a “dynamic entrepreneur”) and imitations (imitation of an innovation by competitors).

    Service innovation is the development of a new service. Service development is on the same level as product innovation in the innovation process, but is characterized by a number of special features. These result primarily from the immateriality of services in the course of the value-added process (potential dimension) and from the integration of external factors, in particular the cooperation of the customer in their provision (process dimension).
